Fallout 3. God fucking damnit. Fallout 3.
Yes, I've heard all the criticism and all the bashing (and have even agreed with some of it), but you see... I'm not a big RPG player, so any stuff they throw at it that way is lost on me. Plus, I never had much love for the original Fallout games, since I never had any love for RPG's, and nothing but hate for the turn-based ones. Plus, it always pissed me off to be right next to a huge fucking radscorpion and still miss when I try to kick it. I do like FPS'es, and found the shooting parts annoying at first, but when I got used to VATS and started leveling up my char, things only got better from there.
The thing is, children, Fallout 3 has something that seems to have gone way over the heads of the critics, and that's atmosphere. No matter how long I play the damn game, there's always some weird shit popping up that makes me go "Whoa" like Keanu Reeves in the Matrix. There're always robots programmed to believe they are former USA presidents, there's always a smart Super Mutant (not Fawkes, mind you) roaming the wasteland at night, and there's always the AntAgonizer. The Goddamn AntAgonizer.
But more than everything, there's the feeling of walking through a godforsaken hellhole surrounded by rusty cars, desertes houses and ruined buildings, finding only bloodthirsty giant scorpions or Raiders or mutated bears, and the elation when you finally see a green dot on your radar that signifies an encounter that will not end up in death... It's marvelous. For the first time in a long time I really feel like exploring this game's world, not just go from A to B getting zany quests and moving on with the friggin' story.
So it's fun stuff. Extremely fun stuff. And I've got a feeling that these are gonna be some really nice holidays.
